Clearwater is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, USA, northwest of Tampa and St. Petersburg. The Gulf of Mexico is to the west of Clearwater, while Tampa Bay is to the southeast. The city has a population of 107,685 according to the 2010 census. [4] Clearwater is the county seat of Pinellas County[5] and the smallest of the three major cities that comprise the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan region, sometimes known as the Tampa Bay Area.

Cleveland Street is a historic route in the city, and the city includes BayCare Ballpark and Coachman Park. [6] The Intracoastal Waterway separates the city from Clearwater Beach. Clearwater Marine Aquarium is located in the city of Clearwater. Clearwater is home to Scientology's global headquarters.

Present-day The Tocobaga were the original inhabitants of Clearwater. Fort Harrison, named for William Henry Harrison, was built as an outpost during the Seminole Wars by the United States Army in 1835. [8] The fort was built on a cliff overlooking Clearwater Harbor, which ultimately became part of the Harbor Oaks residential complex in the early twentieth century. Archaeologists from the University of South Florida investigated the site in 1962 after Mark Wyllie uncovered an underground ammo bunker while planting a tree in his yard. [9]

After the Federal Armed Occupation Act of 1842 provided 160 acres (0.65 km2) to anybody willing to bear guns and cultivate the land, the area's population expanded. [10] The Stevens, Stevenson, Sever, and McMullen families were among the first to claim and farm significant amounts of land. [11] Clear Water Harbor was the name of the region before to 1906. The name "Clear Water" is supposed to have originated from a pure water spring near where the City Hall building now stands. There were other more freshwater springs studded the bluff, many of which were in the bay or harbor itself.

The first road connecting Clearwater and Tampa, which was once part of Hillsborough County, was completed in 1849, greatly reducing the previous day-long trip between the cities.

During the American Civil War, Union gunboats plundered the community's supplies on a regular basis, while the majority of the able-bodied men were fighting for the Confederate Army.

[12] The town began to grow in the late nineteenth century, spurred on by Peter Demens' building of the city's first passenger train line in 1888. Clearwater was formed in 1891, and the first mayor was James E. Crane. [13] After railroad mogul Henry B. Plant erected the huge Victorian resort hotel Belleview Biltmore just south of Clearwater in 1897, the area's reputation as a holiday destination rose.

Clearwater's population had increased to over 400 by the early 1900s, peaking at roughly 1,000 in the winter. The Clearwater Sun, the city's oldest newspaper, was founded on March 14, 1914. [14] On May 27, 1915, Clearwater was reincorporated as a city and became the county capital of Pinellas County, which separated from Hillsborough County in 1912. In 1915, a bridge across Clearwater Harbor was erected, connecting the city to Clearwater Beach to the west. Clearwater Beach, while being on a distinct barrier island, is owned by the city of Clearwater and faces the Gulf of Mexico. The original drawbridge has been replaced with a new, much taller bridge that arcs over the bay; the connected road is part of State Road 60 and is known as Clearwater Memorial Causeway.

During WWII, Clearwater served as a major training facility for US troops going for Europe and the Pacific. Almost every hotel in the region was utilized as a barracks for incoming recruits, including the Belleview Biltmore and the Fort Harrison Hotel. [15] Vehicle traffic was often stopped for companies of soldiers parading through downtown, and nighttime blackouts were usual practice to confound potential enemy bombers. The lonely and isolated Dan's Island, today known as the highrise-dominated Sand Key, was utilized as a target for strafing and bombing practice by US Army Air Corps fighter-bombers.*
